Boxbird was set up in February 2008 by print enthusiast Alice Teague and illustrator Graham Carter. Run from our own printing studio in Brighton Boxbird has fast become one of the premiere online galleries for exciting new talent, showcasing some of the UK’s finest illustrators, printmakers and fine artists including Fiona Hewitt, Zara Wood, Sally Elford, Ben Newman and many more.
Over the last three years Boxbird founders Graham & Alice have been working on shows for the Brighton Fringe Festival, and in 2007 launched the award winning Show Below. Exhibiting art by 10 artists, including many who are now represented by Boxbird. Show Below has received massive critical acclaim and become a highlight of the festival. For the last two years artists exhibiting in the show have been awarded with both the first and second place Visual Arts Prize, and in 2008 we took second place in the Argus Angel Awards for best show in the fringe.
Our 2009 fringe festival exhibition at Boxbird Gallery, CinemaScope, showcased an incredible collection of exclusive cinema inspired work by over 30 illustrators & printmakers including Graham Rawle, Jon Burgerman, Graham Carter, Modern Toss and the Peepshow Illustration Collective. The 4 week exhibition opened to critical acclaim nationally and was awarded the public's choice award for best show in the festival.
As well as established artists Boxbird is keen to support graduate and student artists, we understand the importance of providing a safe and well informed first step on the commercial ladder. Boxbird welcomes submissions of works from new artists as well as those already recognised for their talents, if you would like to submit work for our consideration click here.
Boxbird holds regular shows in our Hove based Gallery & studios, and will be touring the UK art fairs throughout 2009.
