Sally Elford

Sally is a Brighton based print maker, designer and illustrator with a passion for mid-century design and decorative pattern. She finds inspiration in all sorts of nooks and crannies but most often when browsing through flea-markets or gazing out the window of her small home based studio.
Image makers of the 1950s and 60s have made a pretty evident impression on Sally - particularly in the flat colour, simplicity and sweeping lines seen in much of her work. She often likes to bring a satisfying contrast to these graphical lines with a loose painted background: sometimes the images are as much about these opposing qualities than the actual subject matter.
There is considerable variety in her choice of subjects - ‘a man made object is no less worthy of committing to print than an image from nature' - whatever she chooses gets ‘processed' in the same way: subject observed, simplified to its most important visual elements, its form stylised or exaggerated and then colour used to add dimension and ambience.
Sally produces all her screen prints by hand in small editions. Due to the ‘hands on' nature of this printing process, each piece will be unique. Reasonably priced giclée prints are also available.
